Android Automotive OS (AAOS for short) is an extension of the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). It is used in the automotive field in heads-up displays and in-vehicle infotainment systems.
With Android Automotive, Google Takes ist well–known, sophisticated Android smartphone operating system to the next level. By connecting to vehicle bus systems, like the well-known CAN bus, Android functions as the perfect vehicle control centre and head unit. Android Automotive benefits from the experience and best practices gained from over 15 years of smartphone development. It provides a familiar environment which serves as a manufacturer-independent basis for simple, rapid application development; a high security standard integrated directly into the operating system; a sophisticated hardware abstraction layer; and mature tools for creating graphically advanced head unit designs with company-specific branding.
In Android Auto, Google provides a second, less extensive way for vehicle manufacturers to enable their customers to experience the benefits of Android, particularly in the infotainment sphere. In compatible vehicles, Android Auto can be mirrored from a smartphone directly onto the vehicle’s head unit, temporarily replacing the manufacturer’s display while the phone is connected. Android Auto can also be implemented as an aftermarket upgrade to older vehicles via compatible stereo systems.
