optimic Embedded Technology Enables Clear Communication
Good quality sound is essential to the success of sporting events and presentations or in places of worship or universities where speakers or singers are performing. Optimic, a Hamburg-based company, has developed an eponymous device which ensures optimum sound and speech intelligibility, even with the trickiest spatial or ambient acoustics – and which does so completely automatically and in real time. The product also provides benefits for the video and audio production industries. In order to give Optimic’s intelligent algorithms a robust, flexible foundation, inovex took on the development of the embedded system.
The Product
Optimic has developed an algorithm which fundamentally improves the quality of vocal audio broadcast over public address systems. It uses AI to remove background noise and room reverberation in real time, while suppressing static and feedback and optimising vocals for maximum intelligibility. To enable these improvements to be made during live operations, Optimic has created an audio interface which uses the algorithm to make the necessary improvements to incoming audio signals.
inovex supported the project by providing the appropriate embedded system to ensure that the software runs stably and reliably on the device. The inovex experts also set up over-the-air updates to put Optimic’s product on a secure footing for the future.
Technical Implementation
inovex developed a custom embedded operating system based on Yocto, the industry standard for embedded Linux systems. Using Yocto delivers a variety of advantages. In addition to providing high-quality support for a variety of hardware architectures, Yocto is an open-source system which enables even wide-ranging modifications to be made to systems at all levels. This was exactly what Optimic needed to ensure the extensive integration of its high-performance audio hardware with its intelligent algorithm. Linux is also characterised by very rapid programme boot speeds, making it the perfect platform for an agile audio interface designed to satisfy the highest standards.
In order to make the devices future-proof, inovex integrated an update system, Mender, which enables resilient updates to be performed via USB or OTA.
Further Support
The project was executed in multiple stages. Once Optimic had successfully created a prototype using Raspberry Pi, inovex was able to use Yocto to set up the series. Following an additional software testing phase, the operating system was finalised and equipped with the Mender update mechanism. inovex also monitored the launch and continues to support Optimic as required.
The collaboration also involved the transfer of knowledge. Optimic was given regular insights into working with the Yocto Project. This will enable the company to operate and maintain the system themselves in the future. The resulting documentation was, of course, also provided to Optimic upon completion of the project.
